The Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola is a place of worship located in the town of Paola, in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. Dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, the patron saint of Calabria, it is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in the region.
History of the Sanctuary
The construction of the Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola began in 1562, shortly after the saint's canonization. The project was commissioned by the Bishop of Cosenza, Giuseppe Tallarico, and was completed in 1582, thanks to the contributions of many faithful devotees.
The sanctuary was built on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo, which had been destroyed by an earthquake in the 5th century. Over the centuries, the sanctuary underwent numerous modifications and expansions, evolving into its current form.
Architecture of the Sanctuary
The Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola boasts an impressive and evocative architecture, featuring a Baroque-style façade. The façade is adorned with numerous statues and bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Paola and other saints.
The interior of the sanctuary consists of three naves, with a barrel-vaulted ceiling decorated with frescoes illustrating biblical scenes and moments from the lives of saints. The main altar is crafted in polychrome marble, while the side altars are adorned with paintings and sculptures representing saints and angels.
The side chapels of the sanctuary are rich in artworks, including paintings, sculptures, reliquaries, and ex-votos, donated by the faithful seeking the saint's intercession.
Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary
The Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola is a highly frequented pilgrimage site, attracting faithful from all over Calabria and the rest of Italy who come to pray to the saint and seek his protection.
The most significant pilgrimage takes place on April 2, during the Feast of Saint Francis of Paola. On this occasion, thousands of devotees gather at the sanctuary to attend the solemn mass and venerate the saint's relics.
In addition to the Feast of Saint Francis of Paola, the sanctuary hosts many other religious and cultural events, such as concerts, exhibitions, and conferences.
